Overdose witnesses fail to act all too often. Not because they don’t know how to help, but because they’re paralyzed by indecision—they assume someone else will call for help. We wanted to empower these San Franciscans to save lives. Leveraging revolutionary drone delivery technology by Zipline, we created NaxNow, giving the entire city easy emergency access to Naloxone in 2 minutes or less.

2 Minute Response Time

2 Minute Response Time

The drones, Zips, travel at 70mph, making it possible to cross San Francisco end-to-end in 7 minutes. But that wasn’t nearly fast enough for us. We strategically placed dispatch stations throughout the city by partnering with hospitals, fire houses, and crisis centres, supporting a 2-minute response time citywide. Their infrastructure, our staff, a fraction of the traditional response time.

Why San Francisco?

San Francisco has been thrust into the limelight as the face of the U.S. opioid epidemic. But many cities struggle with drugs; that’s not unique. NaxNow works especially well in San Francisco because of the precedent set by other innovative automated solutions, like self-driving cars. Not every city would be so welcoming to this tech. Plus, eco-friendly solutions (which we are) rule all there. Finally, it doesn’t hurt that Zipline is already headquartered in San Francisco.

How is it free?

When someone places an order through NaxNow, they’re charged a temporary deposit. EMS arrives and uses their end of the app to confirm the emergency is legitimate. The user is quickly refunded the deposit, and Zipline temporarily boots the cost. When emergency services create their report, they include if a NaxNow order was used. After the paperwork is completed, Zipline is reimbursed by the city for the cost of the Naloxone, all wrapped up into San Francisco’s harm reduction budget.

100% battery power. Enough said.

Human-
Centered Design

NaxNow prioritizes functionality over flair, perfect for the panicked mind. Form follows function, which is why most of the landing page is occupied by our big red DISPATCH button. It’s easy to use at a glance during an emergency. The goal isn’t to impress with complexity, but serve with purpose.

Messaging

Our ads are unapologetically brash. We needed to set ourselves apart from the other messaging about Naloxone in San Francisco, which is typically very sanitized and informational. In doing so, we captured an entirely different audience—one that’s gone numb to squeaky-clean messaging.
